Your smile is one of the very first things that people notice about you. Imperfections in your teeth (discoloration, misalignment, damage, missing teeth, etc.) can greatly impact the beauty of your smile, and send the wrong impression. At OC Dental, we can restore the quality of your smile with cosmetic dentistry services.
WHAT ARE DENTURES?
Missing teeth are not only inconvenient and uncomfortable, but they can also have negative effects on your jaw and oral health. When a tooth is lost or extracted, the bone where it once was no longer has anything to support and will start to recede. This can result in a change to the bite and even facial structure. Missing teeth also make it difficult to eat and enjoy the foods you normally do. One of the most well-known and popular solutions for missing teeth is dentures, complete and partial. They are a removable dental appliance that is custom-made to fit a patient’s jaw. Complete dentures are used if all the teeth have been lost while partials can be used if some of the natural teeth are still present.
TYPES OF DENTURES
There are three types of dentures:
- Conventional: a complete denture placed in the mouth after all the teeth have been lost or removed
- Immediate: are created before the teeth are removed and can be used on the same day
- Overdentures: fit over the teeth when any healthy ones remain

WEARING AND MAINTENANCE
It may feel awkward to wear dentures at first. They often cause some irritation and soreness, along with increased saliva production. These effects usually last for only a short period of time. It will take some practice to speak normally again with dentures in the mouth.
Though they are prosthetics, dentures require careful cleaning just as natural teeth do. They should be taken out every night to be brushed and stored in water or a denture solution to prevent warping. Taking them out at night also allows the gums some time to heal from wearing the dentures all day. Taking proper care of the dentures will ensure that they will last for years.
