Dental restorations are used to restore the use, appearance, and integrity of the tooth structure. Structural loss in teeth usually occurs through either external trauma or via tooth decay. The degree of restoration required can vary from the simple filling of a cavity to the replacement of a series of missing teeth.

Common dental restorations include crowns and caps, dentures and partial dentures, and root canal therapy. Restorations can be completed during one visit as is the case with fillings or over several visits as with dentures and partial dentures.

In addition to restoring the use, appearance, and integrity of the tooth structure, dental restorations must be comfortable for the patients. Long lasting and comfortable wear is the primary reason that the more complex restorations can require multiple visits.
